ABOUT MTV SHUGA

MTV Shuga is a 360-degree media and on-the-ground, campaign aimed at young people aged 15 – 24. Pioneered in Nairobi, Kenya in 2009, MTV Shuga is a long-running drama series and multi-award-winning multimedia campaign that follows the lives of young people. Aired on MTV channels around the world, the content is also offered rights-free to 3rd party broadcasters and content platforms, and used as a teaching aid by educators, healthcare workers and grassroots HIV/AIDS organisations around the world.

Ayanda’s accolades include the Mail and Guardian200 Young South African, SAFTAS and two Royalty Soapie nominations. As the Founder and CEO at Actor Spaces, in his role as the Senior Casting Director, Ayanda is instrumental in leading the SA casting for King Shaka (CBS/Showtime), Isono(BET Africa), Estate (SABC), Hlomu: The Wife (Showmax) and many others.

Yvonne leads MTV SAF operations in Southern Africa. She has been instrumental in the development of MTV Shuga Down South as a brand and the birth of the MTV Shuga peer education programme.

Stephanie has unique knowledge and perspectives, developed from playing the role of ‘Tsholo’ in MTV Shuga: Down South season 1 and from working as an advocate and ambassador for MTV-SAF since 2016, including her role as Co-Chair.

Malibongwe Mdwaba is an award winning Actor, Voice over artist, Arts manager and Social activist – with over five years of experience in the television, film and entertainment industry. The Khayelitsha-born actor has featured in various roles in seminal television shows starting off as a background actor for three years then moving to score featured, supporting and lead roles. These include; Ubudoda, Romeo & Romeo, Isithembiso, MTV Shuga, UNina, UManyano, UMama, BET’s Isono, Netflix’s Justice Served and Disney+ Hotstar’s Lootere.

Samke Makhoba

Character on MTV Shuga Down South: Khensani

Samke Makhoba is a South African filmmaker and actress who studied Film and Television Production (with honours) in Johannesburg, South Africa at the University of Witwatersrand. During her academic career, she was discovered by ‘MTV Shuga’ at the 2016 open auditions where she landed her first lead role as Khensani on ‘Shuga Down South’. Soon after Shuga DS, she landed more lead roles on shows such as SABC’s ‘Rented Family’, and Showmax’s hit medical drama 'Wounds’. She also starred in films including Mzansi Magic’s ‘Isibonakaliso’, Netflix’s ‘Collision’ and eVod’s ‘Surviving Gaza’.
